A couple of years ago I went to an appointment at a dentist that I had never attended before. The receptionist handed me the new patient paperwork to fill out and where it asked for my employment details I wrote, ‘Mum’.
When I returned the paperwork to the receptionist she looked at it, crossed it out, and replaced it with the words ‘Home duties’ and said it sounded better.
She caught me by surprise and my feeble response was a weak sounding, “I love being a Mum”. I meant it with all my heart but I felt like I’d just been steamrolled. I wish I’d defended my motherhood better than I did.
When I think about that now I wish I’d have said something stronger that really affirmed to her my belief that motherhood is a wonderful calling. That it is more than somebody who stays home to clean up after her children. That my role as a Mum is divine in its calling.
Motherhood is wonderful! It means that I get to see most of my children’s firsts. I get to see their beautiful personalities emerge. I get to see them make new discoveries and try new things. I get to be the one that my children cry out for when they need comfort. I get to be the one that my son complains to when he wants Daddy to give him a turn on the Wii. I get to be the one that, for now, they will pick first over any other person in the room.
I have the important role of guiding and influencing how my children see themselves. How they see other people. How they see Heavenly Father. And they will hold me accountable if I influence them the wrong way. Heavenly Father will hold me accountable for the things that I teach my children. I pray that I can do this most important work righteously.
Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live.
My job is far too important to be downgraded to home duties! It is an upgrade! It is not easy but it sure beats out anything else on this planet.
Here’s to motherhood and being the mothers that Heavenly Father needs us to be!
